Once the spark plugs have been pulled it’s a good time to give them a look-over. You will need to remove the engine cover, the coil pack harness, and then pull each individual coil pack. Installing the spark plugs is fairly straightforward. For the MK7 GTI we chose the popular Denso IKH24KT. Going too cold can prevent the plug getting hot enough to burn off deposits in daily driving and can result in fouling and misfire – so a compromise must be struck for a street car. Generally speaking when starting to tune a car, we go for a step colder plug than factory to avoid pre-ignition. A colder spark plug helps this because it pulls more heat into the head of the engine from the combustion chamber and is less likely to act as a point of ignition before it is triggered by the ECU. The knock sensors can’t pick up pre-ignition because pre-ignition happens when the air-fuel mixtures ignites BEFORE the spark event and will usually result in a hole in a piston or broken rod. However it will reduce the CHANCE for pre-ignition and pre-ignition is much more serious than knock and more damaging should it occur. Replacing the spark plugs with a step colder will not prevent knock – knock is a result of fuel used, tune, and temperatures – and I mention this because we get asked all the time if replacing the plugs will reduce knock. Knock is caused by multiple flame fronts starting AFTER the initial flame front was started by the spark plug. Knock is what the knock sensor picks up and you can datalog this as ignition corrections during a pull. Because of this our red development MK7 GTI is getting a fresh set of plugs.ĭo not confuse pre-ignition and detonation (or knock). With more heat in the combustion chamber, you may start to move outside the optimal heat range of the OEM plugs and thus have an increased risk of pre-ignition. I haven't gotten to look at the data log yet but while watching it all I saw were high positive numbers and OAR is now at -1.00. So this morning I flashed to stage 1 93 OTS and got the chance to do one WOT pull. I ran that tank about dry and filled up yesterday with some fresh 93 at a shell in frisco, TX (civilization) and now I'm not seeing any negative corrections under WOT on the stage 0 map, just the occasional -.5 -2.5 driving around town. The gas in it when I got the tune was 93 from a shell station in BFE Texas on my way back from Arkansas last weekend. I re flashed to the stage 0 OTS "simulated stock" and was still getting negative corrections under WOT but only -1.0 with OAR of -.75. It's a custom 91 oct tune that I see the high negatives on and an OAR of -.57 even with step colder plugs gapped at.

Yes it is an authorized Cobb pro tuner it used to be the actual Cobb plano shop they just sold it to the GM and he changed the name. When I try to insert the log files to this post it says the files are "invalid"

I can post the data logs but I need a little direction on how to do so. If anyone can help me figure this out I would appreciate it, I would like to drive my car but now I'm afraid to and Cobb plano is not open till Tuesday. I don't know too much about this stuff but from what I've read that is not good. The corrections are consistently negative under WOT highest in 3rd. So, I went for I drive and did some logging in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. He then told me I probably needed to change to 1 step colder plugs and gap them properly so, I bought some NGK's they had in stock, gapped them to.

corrections, so he built me a custom tune based on a 91 oct baseline tune in which he got the car to make 335 whp and 380 wtq (only mods are Cobb filter and Cobb hard pipe kit).He said he didn't feel comfortable continuing dyno pulls with how much timing it was pulling. I got my RS protuned at Cobb/Growler in Plano, TX today and he told me the car was knocking big time and overboosting too much and even on the 93 stage 1 OTS map he was getting seriously negative ign.
